Charlie Elwes, Oliver Gillen and Mark Lambert are all at Radley College and are 14/15 years old. They are undertaking the enormous challenge of canoeing from Balazuc in the Ardèche region of France all the way south to the Mediterranean sea, where they will kayak West, hugging the coastline.
The trip is over 150 miles and they are hoping to complete it in 7/8 days. This means that they are aiming to cover a over 35 miles per day. The most difficult part of the route will be down the coast where they will not have the current to help them. During the river part of the route, 30% of the river are rapids, 5% of which are dangerous.
The boys will be carrying out this epic trip in two kayaks: a solo and a double. They all have varying experience, Olly is the most experienced, Mark and Charlie are novices.
They will also have a support car following them which will meet them at every stop. The support team will include Charlie’s dad.
They aim to raise £5,000 and will start the challenge on the 8th July 2012.
