In September 2010, sixteen legs will power through the demanding climbs and bone-shaking descents of the UK countryside when their owners cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats (LEJOG) for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
The eight riders will be doing an average of 73 miles per day and the trip is going to take them fourteen days. They are now deep into their training schedule, getting in the saddle whenever they can. Seven of the riders are from Bristol and one is from London.
The riders are:
Adam Lewes
Dylan Radclyffe
Mark Walters
Mat Cutler
Mark Fleetham
Paul Brana-Martin
Jack Williams-Dodd
Joseppie O'Brien
Adam, manager of Bristol's Bike Workshop first had the idea, as it's always been an ambition of his. When Dylan said he'd join in, he suggested doing it for charity, and picked Breakthrough for very good reasons. He lost his girlfriend, the extremely talented singer songwriter Meena Reetooraz, to breast cancer in December 2009. After a second diagnosis Meena showed incredible courage in the way that she dealt with life as her mobility was taken away from her, and never gave up hope. She had immense spirit and determination and was loved by all who met her. After her first diagnosis Meena did all that she could to raise awareness of breast cancer by walking two Walk the Walk Sunwalks and a Moonwalk, taking part in the Bristol Yogathon, and by generally being an inspiration to women; her views and practice on healthy eating, exercise and mind/body strength continue to inspire others to realise the preciousness of life.
Dylan believes that it is her determination that will get him through the ride, just like it has got him through the last few months of his bereavement.
None of the riders have ever undertaken anything like LEJOG before, and everyone is thoroughly looking forward to it. 'Everything about this ride evokes positivity,' says Dylan. 'It's for Meena, for women suffering with breast cancer, and for us. The challenge and the cause are both mighty. I hope that Meena will be watching and feeding us with her incredible spirit.'
