Mum was such a wonderful, caring lady, always putting others before herself. She was devoted to her family and friends. Her door was forever open and she would be waiting to greet you with her amazing smile.

Mum had several health conditions and was in a wheelchair for many years due to a failed spinal operation. This never stopped her enjoying life to the full however, even crewing on a tall ship! In 2013 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and due to her other co-morbidities she was unable to have surgery to remove the lump so could only take a tablet inhibitor. Every time she saw her oncologist we were told she was doing well and there was no spread.

Earlier this year things started to change with her cognitive behaviour and the consultants were baffled. Eventually a specialist diagnosed her with paraneoplastic encephalitis. This is a rare progressive neurological disease that is caused by a cancer/tumour. Sadly the condition was found too late to help Mum and it took her from us very quickly. I want others to be aware of this condition as she was misdiagnosed on several occasions, thinking it was a form of dementia. The cancer may not have spread but it was silently attacking her immune system.

A most beautiful lady taken away far too soon, we shall miss her deeply.

    Mum I miss you with all my heart, it's so hard to believe it's almost a year since you left us. This time last year was our last evening together and you have been in my thoughts all day today. I hold your hand in my dreams and hear you call my name, something I miss terribly in my waking hours.

    I wrote this poem shortly after you passed and I'm now sharing it on your Tribute Fund for others to read.

    My darling Mum

    My darling mum, my shining light
    May your smile remain, forever bright.
    You were my rock, my true best friend,
    And the love I feel, will never end.
    You were always there, in my hours of need
    A mother’s calm hand, taking the lead.
    Guiding me through and showing the way
    Giving me strength to face the day.
    Family times were your deepest pleasure,
    All of us together were moments you’d treasure.
    The love of a Nan, the care of a Mother,
    You were simply the best, there could be no other.
    Through difficult years you fought your best,
    But now is the time for you to rest.
    So lay your head and sleep a while,
    Then waken with renewed grace and style,
    Look now how your spirit runs pure and free,
    And wherever you are, please remember me.
    So darling Mum until we meet again,
    My heart will continue to call your name.
